Finishing The Katy Trail

Six years later, #BaptistBetty and I finally got it done.

The original plan was to ride the entire Katy Trail in a week.  It didn’t quite work out that way.

But for the last several years we would knock out a piece or two of it, one vacation day at a time.  Since then I have been an un-paid endorser of my favorite place to spend an afternoon, and hopefully have not driven you crazy talking about it.

Last week was supposed to be my return to Ragbrai, since 1973 the annual bike ride across Iowa.  Some last minute complications kept our team from making the trip, so I figured it was time to finish the Katy.

Early in the week I rode the Rock Island Spur, a new addition to the Katy Trail State Park, which will hopefully reach far enough north to connect Kansas City and St. Louis by trail.  It’s a nice ride, but new enough that there is not a lot to see or do along the way.

Then I headed east to finish things up, from Defiance, MO to Machens, MO.  Defiance to St. Charles is one of the best rides on the trail.  It’s only about 20 miles, and both towns are good start & stopping points with things to see, do, and eat.

Here’s some pics…

In Defiance, there are several places like this to hang out, right off of the trail across that bridge.

I always enjoy the Lewis & Clark history along the way.

And pretty river views…

and cool bridges to cross.

Rides along the highway are also cool.

Sometimes there are wildlife sightings!

And the trail ends at Machens.
