Americans Paying More For Their Pumpkin Spice

Now that it’s fall, lots of people are bound to be enjoying pumpkin spice everything, but they may not realize it’s hitting them hard in their wallets. A new survey by Magnify Money finds that consumers pay a lot more for their pumpkin spice fix, and they may be surprised at how much. The study looked at 40 items across six retailers, including:

  • Amazon Fresh
  • FreshDirect
  • Target
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Walmart
  • Whole Foods
  • They found that on average, folks are paying 8.8% extra for their pumpkin spice items, which is 10% higher than last year.
  • The biggest difference in pumpkin spice price markup was at Whole Foods.
  • Their 365 Everyday pumpkin spice sandwich cremes cost 41-cents an ounce, compared to their chocolate sandwich cremes, which cost only 15-cents an ounce.
  • That’s a 175.1% spice tax.
  • Overall, Trader Joe’s had the highest pumpkin spice tax, at 17.8%, while Target was the lowest at -3.1%

Of course, the thing people love most when it comes to pumpkin spice? The lattes, and Americans are definitely paying more for that.

  • The average Starbucks PSL cost 15.9% more than their non-pumpkin drink.
  • One place you won’t be paying more is Dunkin, where their pumpkin beverages cost the same as their regular beverages.

But it seems folks may have had their fill of pumpkin spice. According to the report searches for “pumpkin spice” and “pumpkin spice latte” are not as high this year as in the past. But there are some states that do still love it.
