A lot of parents probably get annoyed by all their kids’ toys lying around, especially if their kids have grown tired of playing with them. Well, now Mattel is here to solve that problem, while being environmentally friendly as well.
The toy company has just launched what they’re calling Mattel PlayBack, a toy take back program that will extend the life of unused and outgrown toys, and provides a way to keep the materials out of landfills.
The free service allows parents to send in the old toys, although right now they are only accepting Barbie, Matchbox and Mega toys, (other toys may be accepted in the future). The company will then use the materials from those used toys for future Mattel products. Any material that can’t be used will either be downcycled or converted from waste to energy.
In order to take part in the program, folks in the U.S. and Canada can get a free shipping label here. They’ll have to pack and mail the toys back to Mattel, and then toys will be sorted, processed and recycled. The company hopes by 2030 s to be using 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all products and packaging.
